High Sheriff of Oxfordshire Climate Action Heros

Thame was very well served at the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire’s Climate Action Hero Awards.

These took place at The Wood Centre for innovation in Oxford on Monday 21st February 2022.

#ThameTrees and Thame Green Living took awards for groups and Charles Boundy received an individual award for his work on the Thame Green Living Plan.

Imam Monawar Hussain, the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, said: “The climate emergency is the single biggest issue facing humanity and so I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients of this prestigious award. It has been humbling and inspiring to read the nominations.”

“Taking my theme of celebrating Oxfordshire’s heroes, I felt that it was appropriate to celebrate as many individuals, community groups and businesses as possible, who are passionate about climate action and who have made a demonstrable contribution to their local communities.

“I hope that by doing so, not only is this an opportunity to celebrate and recognise outstanding contributions to climate action in the county, but this will also act as a catalyst and an inspiration, for further climate action initiatives in our county.”

The #ThameTrees project was picked for the ‘community action’ award out of a number of nominated tree planting projects across the county.  It stood out because of the number of trees that we’ve managed to get into the ground.

The team at 21st Century Thame would really like to thank all those volunteers who have turned up to planting parties come rain or shine.  Thanks to those volunteers who have led planting parties and organised tree purchasing and grant application.  Thanks to those who have come forward to make space for new trees.  And of course thanks to the Woodland Trust for the grants of 1000s of trees, to Lucy Electric whose support right from the start has been amazing and to the other sponsors who have allowed the tree planting to continue.

To further support the work of these local Climate Action Heros please do contribute to their collaborative crowdfunder at Tackling Climate Change in Thame – a Community crowdfunding project in Thame

Many thanks to Chris Forsey for the photography at the awards.
